Passion/Palm Lord’s Day

Passion/Palm Lord’s Day

The Passion

Palm Sunday marks the start of Holy Week. On this day, many churches recall final Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem for his final Passover there. Jesus was hailed as the Son of David, having palm and olive branches strewn in his way as he entered the city. This fulfilled the prophecy written in Zechariah 9:9

Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion!
Shout aloud, O daughter Jerusalem!
Lo, your king comes to you;
triumphant and victorious is he,
humble and riding on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

Not long after this reception, Jesus was put on trial and executed as a criminal. His suffering and Passion are the focus of Holy week observances ending with the Commemoration of his Crucifixion on the day commonly referred to as Good Friday.
